Wojska Polskiego Avenue – traffic organisation #1
Marta Kufel

The commencement of the redevelopment of Wojska Polskiego Avenue in Szczecin means that changes must be introduced to the traffic organisation in the midtown section of the road.
Wojska Polskiego Avenue has been closed to traffic on the section from Jagiellońska Street to Zgody Square. Only public transport vehicles may pass through. On Zgody Square only circular traffic is allowed.
Delivery of goods / supplies is only possible between 11 p.m. to 07:00 a.m. The redevelopment contractor has provided access to the entrance gates to this end.
On Jagiellońska Street (towards the intersection with Wojska Polskiego Street) the existing lane for straight ahead traffic has been closed. From the right lane you may drive straight ahead along Jagiellońska Street and left into Wojska Polskiego Avenue.
The recommended diversion has been set along Piastów Avenue and Krzywoustego Street.
The task has been divided into two implementation stages:
STAGE I – includes Wojska Polskiego Avenue road alteration along the section from Zwycięstwa Square to Szarych Szeregów Square, the section of Jagiellońska Street from Piastów Avenue to Wojska Polskiego Avenue and the section of Śląska Street from Więckowskiego Street to the internal road behind the buildings of the “Śródmieście” Housing Association. The project also includes conflicting utilities redevelopment, traffic lights redevelopment, construction of street lighting, elements of street furniture and a fountain, together with a change in traffic organisation in the form of introduction of traffic calming. An important part of the works will be land development in the form of tree and shrub planting. Wojska Polskiego Avenue, the section from Zwycięstwa Square to the Szarych Szeregów roundabout, will become the “green living room” of our city. The planting will include trees that represent our city, long-lived and monumental. There will be, among others, columnar plane trees, as well as beautiful magnolias characteristic of Szczecin. The project involves planting in the central zone along the entire, nearly one-kilometre-long street, along the frontage, within the interior of the planned roundabout on Zgody Square and along the high-rise blocks adjacent to Zgody Square. The planting of vegetation will cover almost a kilometre of a completely new avenue. It will include new shrubs, grasses and perennials.
STAGE II – will include the preparation of design documentation followed by the performance of construction works consisting of road alteration and track remodelling in the area of Zwycięstwa Square. The scope of works will include track remodelling in the section from Brama Portowa to the point where it joins with Krzywoustego Street in order to create shared tram and bus lanes in this section, redevelopment of stop platforms on the northern inlet of the Brama Portowa intersection, and the construction of a new tram stop on Zwycięstwa Square before the intersection with Wojska Polskiego Avenue and Krzywoustego Street towards Kościuszki Square. The works will also include the redevelopment of the road surface and pavements, construction of bikeways, removal of interference with the existing infrastructure, redevelopment and construction of traffic lights, redevelopment of tram catenary network and turnout control system, redevelopment of street lighting, construction of passenger information system, landscaping with elements of street furniture and planting trees and shrubs.
The deadline of the implementation cannot be longer than 24 months starting from the day of signing the agreement for the first and second implementation stage. The gross cost of the works is PLN 80,728,637.11. The project is being implanted by MTM S.A. Contruction and Road Company. The implementation will be supervised by Szczecińskie Inwestycje Miejskie Sp. z o.o.
Revitalisation of Wojska Polskiego Avenue
The “Revitalisation of the area of public space and development of the midtown section of Wojska Polskiego Avenue in Szczecin” project has been implemented in Szczecin since 2004. Due to its unique solutions, it received a grant from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development as part of the competition entitled “Model Urban Revitalisation”. Activities within the project focus on improving the quality of public spaces in the area of Wojska Polskiego Avenue, the living conditions for residents and for operating a business. They are accompanied by various social undertakings.
Design, public contract, implementation – these three words describe in a nutshell the stages of the project related to providing a new quality to Wojska Polskiego Avenue. What the longest street in our city will look like after redevelopment was decided by the residents themselves, who indicated their preferred direction of changes during numerous meetings and consultations. The architectural contest that followed gave these ideas a real shape. The winning vision in the architectural contest for the development of public spaces in the area of Wojska Polskiego Avenue was presented by ARCHAID Jacek Szewczyk Architectural Studio.
