We are getting better at segregating waste

Over 50 thousand tonnes of separated waste is a very good result and Szczecin’s residents should be congratulated. On a less optimistic note, the total amount of waste is increasing every year.

“The figures summarising last year clearly indicate that waste separation, including bio-waste is faring very well in Szczecin,” said Paweł Adamczyk, Director of the Department of Municipal Services. “42,300 tonnes of separated waste collected from properties and 10,000 tonnes accepted at Ekoports is a great result and truly an impressive achievement. I should remind you that in 2014 we were proud of exceeding 20,000 tonnes. We got to 2.5 times more separated waste in just a few years’ time. Well done, Szczecin!”

In 2020 the total weight of collected waste exceeded 127,000 tonnes. This is 2,800 tonnes more than in the previous year and the highest in 7 years. It is also clear that in the whole waste stream, residents are more and more effective in segregating the waste that should be separated.

“The biggest leap was made in packaging waste (plastic, metal, paper, glass) which increased by 30 percent when compared to 2019. The figures for bio-waste were similarly impressive. In 2020, 17,225 tonnes of waste from the brown containers was collected, which is nearly 4,700 tonnes more than a year before. I am confident that this welcome increase in bio-waste was produced mainly by multi-family residential units,” added Piotr Adamczyk. “What previously landed in mixed waste in our kitchens is now thrown into the brown container.

The city’s waste collection system services 28 thousand collection points, which contain a total of 65 thousand colour-coded containers.  Some, such as those located in multi-family residential units, are emptied daily.
