The Sailing Awards Committee has recently finished its session. At the Mayor of Szczecin’s request, one of the awards will be named after the legendary Polish kayaker Aleksander Doba.
This will be the Special Prize awarded to a person, organisation or institution, for their activities connected with sailing, water or marine travel which does not qualify for any of the other awards. The suggestion was made to the Committee by Mayor Piotr Krzystek.
“Thanks to such people as Aleksander Doba, we all believe that anything we can think of is possible. Such a towering figure is worthy of recognition. Our famous explorer was recognised multiple times during his life. Now his journey can go on,” said Piotr Krzystek, Mayor of Szczecin.
On 26 February the Committee of the International Szczecin Sailing Awards adopted a resolution to honour the achievements of explorer Aleksander Doba and to name the Special Prize after him.
Aleksander Doba died on 22 February 2021 during a Mount Kilimanjaro expedition. He was the first man in history to cross the Atlantic solo in a kayak (from Africa to South America). He completed three such crossings.
