Under the decision passed by the main organiser and the cities hosting large sailing ships, the Tall Ships Races 2021 event has been cancelled. Nevertheless, sailing ships will come to Szczecin to participate in the sailing festival.
After many long talks and having considered every possible scenario, the main organiser of the Sail Training International regatta, in consultation with all ports, decided to cancel the Tall Ships Races 2021 event, the reason being the prolonged restrictions due to COVID-19 which preclude the organisation of the race according to its concept. This year’s regatta route has already been rescheduled for 2024 which means that in three years we will be a final port for the participants of the large sailing ships regatta. As a compensation, the City of Szczecin has been given a 50% discount on the application fee.
The onshore events scheduled for the turn of July and August will change their current formula. Tall Ships 2021. Sailing Szczecin is a maritime event which will bring the residents and tourists closer to the sailing world.
Docking on both sides of the Oder River (connected by a floating bridge), impressive ships will create a truly maritime climate. The event will also serve as a huge family festival with a range of interesting activities to choose from: the Food Truck zone, the Craft Beer zone, the Sport and Children zone, and theme parks, including Holiday Park with the biggest millwheel in Poland.
The event will take place from 30 July to 1 August, with Łasztownia being its main venue. In order to avoid traffic jams along the Jana z Kolna Street, commercial stands will be arranged on the terrace of Wały Chrobrego and activity zones for children on Mickiewicza Square.
“Łasztownia and Grodzka Island we feature concerts, workshops, and sports contests”, said Celina Wołosz, Spokesperson of Żegluga Szczecińska Turystyka Wydarzenia. Shanty music will resound from the stage located by the Centaur monument. Tall Ships 2021. Sailing Szczecin Invites You is a new formula which can become a new event in the summer calendar.
Those sailing ships and yachts which still would like to compete on the Baltic Sea will be able to take part in the Baltic Sea Regatta organised by Centrum Żeglarskie. We can assure you that the Baltic Sea Regatta and the onshore events will provide an excellent opportunity to compensate, at least to some extent, for the absence of this year’s the Tall Ships Races. The entire event will be held in accordance with safety rules and effective sanitary regime. The new formula will save the budget PLN 9 million.
