Szczecin is a leader in recycling

49.1 percent is the level of recycling achieved by our city in 2019. This means that we are only one step away from the 50% required in 2020.
“The level of recycling in our city increases systematically and we regularly reach the set levels,” says Paweł Adamczyk, director of the Municipal Economy Department of the Municipal Office. This is, of course, thanks to the residents, whose environmental awareness is growing, but also thanks to the well-organised system of waste collection with a wide range of services, an extensive network of Ecoports or the information and education activities that we are implementing.
How is the level of recycling and preparation for re-use of paper, metals, plastics and glass calculated?
“The formula included in the regulation of the Minister of the Environment is used for this purpose,” states Paulina Łątka from the City Information Centre. “It contains the Umpmts index, which comprises the total share of paper, metal, plastics, glass and multi-material waste in the morphological composition of municipal waste.
In addition, the calculations take into account a number of other data, including: the total weight of collected waste, the weight of individual waste fractions collected separately, the amount of waste per capita and the number of inhabitants.
They are made on the basis of reports from companies collecting waste, from Ecoports and buy-back centres. Meanwhile, in 2019 almost 9,900 tonnes of selective waste was collected in Ecoports alone.
It is worth recalling that communes which in 2020 will not reach the 50 percent level required by the regulations may receive penalties from several hundred thousand up to several million zlotys, and many admit that it is a big challenge for them which may be difficult to meet. However, according to all indications, thanks to the involvement of the residents and the activities of the City, Szczecin is not under the risk of incurring such expenses.
