Szczecin: First municipal wild beehive created

Syrenie Stawy will be inhabited by... bees. Municipal foresters are constructing the first municipal wild beehive. It will be located in a dead tree trunk.

The beehive, a chamber inside the tree trunk hollowed out for bee breeding, will be located right next to the main asphalt alley. Interestingly, the huge dead trunk was brought over by foresters from a completely different location.

“It has been integrated into the existing meadow in Syrenie Stawy - next to honey-yielding goldenrods and by black locusts,” says Andrzej Kus, the City spokesperson for municipal matters and environmental protection. "These plants will benefit the bees throughout the year. In autumn, the hive will be inhabited by breeding bees - a variety that does not exhibit aggressiveness.”

The test solution has been prepared in consultation with beekeeper Zdzisław Baran. He will provide the bees and look after them, alongside the city foresters.

The area will be fenced and will undoubtedly contribute to the increase in biodiversity in the area of Syrenie Stawy. It will also be a great place for educational activities.
