Shelters for hedgehogs are being built in Szczecin

In 42 places in our city you can see unusual mounds made of branches and leaves. These are shelters for hedgehogs, among other animals, prepared by the Municipal Services Company.
They look inconspicuous but they matter a lot. Biocenotic piles have been created in 42 places in our city. They are shelters for small animals, such as hedgehogs or lizards. They can be found, among others, in Żeromski Park, by Powstańców Wielkopolskich Street, Romantyczna Street, as well as on the Right Bank – in Wszystkich Dzieci Park.
“Branches have been piled up in these locations,” reported Andrzej Kus, the City’s Spokesperson for Municipal and Environmental Matters. “They are not located near forests but in park enclaves where more people walk close by. In places that are not mowed, overgrown with grass or more dense greenery.
After several days since the piles were created, two of them had already been destroyed. One by Romantyczna Street was burned, the other by Jakuba Wujka Square was taken apart.
“At the same time, the culprit left information thanking us for preparing the firewood…,” said Andrzej Kus. “In all locations where biocenotic piles have been set up, notice boards will be placed. We hope that when that happens no one will have any doubts as to whether or not they can destroy the piles.
It is possible that, when need arises, more shelters for small animals will be created.
