It’s time for rebuilding Wojska Polskiego Avenue
Marta Kufel

This project will entirely alter the city centre in Szczecin. All necessary documents have been already sent to the Tender Electronic Daily, European public procurement journal, which means that calls for tenders for the rebuilding of Wojska Polskiego Avenue will be soon published.
The task has been divided into two implementation stages:
Stage I – it covers the rebuilding of the road network of Wojska Polskiego Avenue, along a section from Zwycięstwa Square to Szarych Szeregów Square, a section of Jagiellońska Street from Piastów Avenue to Wojska Polskiego Avenue, and a section of Śląska Street from Więckowski Street to the internal road behind the building of the “Śródmieście” Housing Cooperative. In addition, the investment will cover the adjustment of conflicting service (utility) infrastructure, the rebuilding of the traffic lights, the installation of street lighting, the provision of street furniture and the construction of a fountain, and the change of traffic arrangement by means of traffic calming measures.
A significant part of the works will include land development by planting trees and shrubs. Wojska Polskiego Avenue, along the section between Zwycięstwa Square and Szarych Szeregów Roundabout will become a “green living space” of our city. The trees will be presentable, long-lived and monumental. They will include column-like planes and gorgeous magnolias, characteristic of Szczecin. The planting design includes the following planting locations: in the middle lane throughout the street, with a length of almost one kilometre, along the street frontages, in the middle of the roundabout at Zgody Square or alongside the tower blocks neighbouring on the square. The plantings will also appear alongside an entirely new avenue, which is almost one kilometre long. The plantings will include new shrubs, grasses and perennials.
Stage II – it will include the preparation of design documentation and the implementation of construction works such as the reconstruction of the road and track layout in the area of Zwycięstwa Square. The works will include the redevelopment of the track layout along a section from Brama Portowa to the entry to Krzywousty Street, in order to introduce tram and bus lanes, the rebuilding of platforms at the northern entry to Brama Portowa junction, the building of a new tram stop at Zwycięstwa Square in front of the junction with Wojska Polskiego Avenue and Krzywousty Street in the direction of Kościuszki Square. The works will also cover the redevelopment of the paving of roads and pavements, the construction of cycling paths, the adjustment of the conflicting existing infrastructure, the rebuilding and building of traffic lights, the reconstruction of tram wiring system and the junction control system, the reinstallation of street lighting, the development of the passenger information system, land development with elements of street furniture and the planting of new trees and shrubs.
The deadline for the performance of the contract may not be longer than 24 months starting from the day on which the contract for stages I and II is signed. The project will be supervised by the Szczecińskie Inwestycje Miejskie (Szczecin Municipal Investments) company.
Revitalisation of Wojska Polskiego Avenue
The project “The revitalisation of the public space and the development of a part of Wojska Polskiego Avenue in the city centre of Szczecin” has been implemented in Szczecin since 2014. In view of the unique solutions, it received a subsidy in the competition organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development, entitled “The Model City Revitalisation”. The activities under the project are centred on improving the quality of public space in the area of Wojska Polskiego Avenue, the living conditions of residents and the conditions for carrying out business activities. They are accompanied by various social initiatives.
The design, tenders and the implementation are, in short, the stages of a project aimed at bringing a new quality to Wojska Polskiego Avenue. It was the residents who decided on the appearance of our city’s longest street after the revitalisation, by opting for the preferred direction of change during many meetings and consultations. The architectural competition that followed set the form for their preferences. The winning vision in the competition for the development of the public space in the area of Wojska Polskiego Avenue was put forward by the ARCHAID Jacek Szewczyk Architectural Studio (Pracownia Architektoniczna ARCHAID Jacek Szewczyk).
