Public transport is one of the most important elements of a living urban environment. The development of cities depends precisely on the policy of sustainable transport. In Szczecin, the process of changes began a few years ago and is still ongoing. Its culmination is still ahead of us, therefore the planned changes in the paid parking zone are the result of an extensive discussion on the issue, which entails making further decisions.

While in the difficult time of the pandemic, the metropolitan authorities, looking for savings, increase ticket prices, Szczecin adopts the opposite strategy. Reducing the fees for season tickets is to be an incentive to use public transport. The actions are coherent and are included not only in the sustainable transport policy, but also in the parking area. The plans are long-term and directed already.

A number of investments in public transport in recent years show that sustainable transport is a priority. The Szczecin Fast Tram (Szczeciński Szybki Tramwaj, SKM) and plans for its extension, the modernisation of the depot, the construction of the Turkusowa loop, the redevelopment of Szafera Street, Szarych Szeregów and Wyszyńskiego Square, but most of all starting the construction of the Szczecin Metropolitan Railway clearly indicates the trend and direction in which the city is heading. Szczecin has started a communication revolution and its effects are already being experienced. The  SKM task alone involves the redevelopment or modernisation of railway lines that are 23.75 km long, the construction of integrated junctions and stops with P&R and B&R car parks (elevators, wheelchair ramps) and transport integration devices, such as passenger information boards, ticket machines and validators. All this makes up one of the largest public transport projects in Europe.

Other examples of the coming changes in public transport include additional bus and tram lines, and changes in the transport grid. Public transport vehicles travel over 2 million kilometres more than they did 8 years ago. More than 20 additional services and almost 200 stops were created. Transport on demand turned out to be an innovation on a national scale.

All these changes have had no financial consequences for passengers. Ticket prices have not changed since 2012 - despite inflation and increasing expenditure on public transport.

When comparing the prices of basic everyday products, their increase would certainly be noticeable.

The analysis of tariffs and fees for public transport in the largest agglomerations is complicated due to the diversified area, the number of inhabitants and the zones introduced. However, this does not change the fact that the numbers speak for themselves, and Szczecin is the best in the chart:

On April 1, 2021, Szczecin will outpace other major cities by an even greater margin. While most of them have already announced price increases, we will have cheaper tickets. Season, daily and multi-day tickets will be cheaper by 10-25%.
