A book for a bag of rubbish

On 18 September, also in Szczecin, another edition of the “Book for a bag of rubbish” campaign will take place. It will be the biggest event so far. Residents of 16 voivodeship cities will be able to join in the joint cleaning: Warsaw, Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Szczecin, Bydgoszcz, Lublin, Olsztyn, Białystok, Opole, Rzeszów, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Kielce.
“Book for a bag of rubbish” is a social campaign for cleaning up the world initiated in 2019 by Anna Jaklewicz, a traveller and educator. Its participant jointly clean up forests, riverbanks, city parks – all those places that require intervention due to littering. Books and acknowledgements are gifts for registered participants of the event. This year, thanks to the involvement of the strategic partner – the waste recovery organisation ASEKOL PL, in selected cities the campaign will be extended to include the collection of electronic waste.
“The idea for the campaign encouraging people to take care of the environment and read books was born in Gryfino. There, during a travel festival, I was promoting my book «Indonesia. On the other side of paradise». I wanted to combine travel stories with environmental education. Therefore, I decided to act locally as well, and encourage people to clean up waste together using books as an incentive. During the first campaign, we collected almost two tonnes of rubbish! So I decided to go further. I went on a tour across Poland to promote an ecological lifestyle,” said Anna Jaklewicz.
On 18 September the “Book for a bag of rubbish” campaign for the first time will be held in all voivodships of Poland. The organisation of such a large event would not be possible without the cooperation with ASEKOL PL S.A. – a non-profit recovery organisation established to fulfil the obligations of companies introducing electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and packaging on the Polish market. The range of its activities includes, among others, ensuring proper, legal and effective collection and processing of electrical waste, batteries and packaging. An important aspect of its activities is also running public education campaigns raising public awareness of proper waste management. This goal is pursued through various social campaigns, in particular activating local communities.
On 18 September, as many as 1,000 books will be given to registered participants of the event. They will be given to those who will be the first to register their participation in the event and take part in the joint cleaning.
