Three decades of partnership, assistance and integration. 30 years have passed since the signing of the Treaty between the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. On this occasion, the programme of this year’s edition of Polish-German Cooperation Days will include a special part devoted to the anniversary of this event.
“It is safe to say that this document altered our reality. The Treaty made us important partners and, as subsequent decades have shown, also good neighbours. Consequently, it influenced the lives of millions of people from Poland and Germany,” said Daniel Wacinkiewicz, Deputy Mayor of Szczecin.
On 17 June 1991, Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany signed the Treaty of Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation in Bonn. The signatories of the agreement were J.K. Bielecki and K. Skubiszewski, H.Kohl and H.D. Genscher. The Treaty marked the beginning of a new chapter in Polish-German relations, based on reconciliation and democratic values. It created perspectives for the development of economic, social, scientific and cultural relations and enabled future international cross-border partnership on many levels. The document became a declaration of support by the Federal Republic of Germany for Poland’s aspirations to join the European Community. In keeping with the principles of the Treaty, the City of Szczecin has been successfully implementing many projects on a partnership basis, contributing to achieving common German-Polish goals. This integration is of great importance in developing common solutions to contemporary challenges.
