Secrets of Chopin’s Piano
Katarzyna Jackowska

Szczecin Philharmonic
In times of cultural and technological uncertainty, music invites us to reflect on authenticity and the future by looking back to its sources. While historically informed performance has become standard for early music, Romantic repertoire — especially Chopin’s piano works — still raises questions about sound and interpretation.
In the 19th century, the piano existed in many forms, each with its own character. Chopin favoured subtle, expressive instruments such as the Pleyel, valuing colour and nuance over sheer volume. This concert places historical instruments at the centre, revealing how their unique sound shapes musical meaning.
Alongside works by Chopin and Beethoven, the programme includes music by Feliks Janiewicz and an early symphony by Mendelssohn. The evening will be preceded by a seminar introducing historical pianos and performance practice, offering listeners a deeper understanding of how playing music as it was once played can open new aesthetic horizons today.
