Otto Manasse: A Rediscovered Composer from Szczecin

    The Ducal Castle in Szczecin

Part of the 9th Festival of Reclaimed Music.

This concert is dedicated to Otto Manasse, born in Szczecin in 1861, and presents the work of a composer whose legacy remained almost entirely forgotten for decades. Born into a Jewish family in Szczecin, trained as a chemist and connected for most of his life with Munich, Manasse belonged to a generation of European Jews whose lives were tragically disrupted by Nazism. Although he formally converted to Lutheranism, after 1933 he became the target of systematic persecution.

In 1942, Manasse was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto-camp, where he died a few months later. His place of burial remains unknown.
