The Summer Theatre – no passage through Fałata Park Avenue

With the next construction stage of the Summer Theatre being launched, some traffic restrictions along Fałata Park Avenue are to be expected.

Since last Monday (12 October 2020), there has been no passage through Fałata Park Avenue at the level of the reconstructed Summer Theatre. Entrance to Platon Bar and the public toilets building will remain open till the end of October while from 1 November, the Fałata Avenue will be closed within the fenced area of the existing amphitheatre.

      The investment

The investment includes extending the stage from the side of the auditorium; pulling down the old roofing and constructing a new one; reconstructing the auditorium; reconstructing access roads to the facility; as well as reconstructing electrical, water sewage and sanitary networks. The work will also cover renovation and maintenance of the existing reinforced-concrete arch.

The Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre is situated in the south-western section of the Kasprowicza Park. It is home to large performances by renowned artists, ceremonies and local events, as well as everyday gatherings in an unusual setting. Its origins date back to the 1930s, which was when the first park stage was constructed as a wooden platform with rows of wooden benches. In 1974 the Theatre underwent major reconstruction based on architect Zbigniew Abrahamowicz’s design, following which it acquired its present shape with the distinctive-looking arch, its form resembling that of the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis (designed by Eero Saarinen). In 2000 the roofing was replaced, the auditorium underwent major renovation, and some repair work was performed in the orchestra pit. In December 2015 the architectural competition for “Reconstruction and extension of the Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre” was concluded, with the award-winning project submitted by the London-based design office Flanagan Lawrence.

The work should be completed within a maximum of 20 months following the contract signing.
