Orpheus in the Underworld
Katarzyna Jackowska
The Castle Opera in Szczecin
A madcap musical comedy featuring the famous Cancan
Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld is one of the most well-known and entertaining operettas in musical history. In this lively parody, everything is turned upside down, with the characters’ stories reimagined in a witty and cheeky manner. The plot is filled with intrigue, irony, and a series of comical and risqué events, culminating in the unforgettable 'Infernal Galop' in the second act – the famous Cancan.
While the piece may appear light-hearted, it tackles timeless themes such as double standards, hypocrisy, and the abuse of power by the elite.
In the Schlossoper's production, the ancient world is replaced by the world of modern media – TV, film, and internet culture. The story unfolds amidst actors, celebrities, and pop culture stars. Olympus becomes a major television show, Earth is portrayed as a reality series, and the Underworld is transformed into a low-budget horror film, with exaggerated characters drawn from famous movies. The stage itself turns into a film studio, with the audience witnessing the performance as a 'live broadcast' projected onto a large screen.
