WOWAKIN: Ancient Melodies, New Energy
Katarzyna Jackowska

Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre in Szczecin
Part of the 9th Festival of Reclaimed Music.
The WoWaKin & Friends concert presents the musical traditions of rural Poland in a way that goes beyond the usual divide between “folk” and “classical” music.
The ensemble draws on the rich traditions of Mazovia, especially the Sanniki region, whose distinctive rhythms and ornamentation left a clear mark on Fryderyk Chopin’s mazurkas. The programme also includes music from the Lublin, Podlasie and Radom regions.
In WoWaKin’s interpretations, traditional obereks, mazurkas and wiwats regain their original energy and subtlety while also becoming a source of musical reflection on form, rhythm, scale and, above all, the lasting power of local traditions that have influenced art music for centuries.
