Sacrum Non Profanum | Concert of Ukrainian Music

Katarzyna Jackowska

Szczecin Philharmonic
The International Music Festival Sacrum Non Profanum has been organised annually since 2005 by the Pomeranian Instrumentalists Association 'Academia' in Szczecin.
This year marks the 20th edition of the festival, themed "Music Unites Nations - Masterpieces of Film Music." It is once again dedicated to the unsung heroes of the war in our eastern neighbouring countries - the women and children of Ukraine.
One of the concerts within Sacrum Non Profanum will feature the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine from Lviv, performing in the Symphony Hall of the Philharmonic. This orchestra, with a history spanning over two centuries, is associated with renowned figures such as Josef Elsner, Franz Xaver Mozart, and Karol Lipiński. Before World War II, famed conductors like Jerzy Kołaczkowski, Kazimierz Wiłkomirski, and Grzegorz Fitelberg conducted the orchestra, and it hosted musicians of the calibre of Béla Bartók, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss. Post-war, the Lviv Philharmonic has seen performances by distinguished composers like Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian, and Dmitri Kabalevsky, as well as world-famous conductors Kirill Kondrashin and Gennady Rozhdestvensky, and brilliant virtuosos such as David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Richter, and Mstislav Rostropovich. The orchestra has also brought together masters of contemporary music like Myroslav Skoryk and Krzysztof Penderecki.
Pianist Violina Petrychenko, an advocate for Ukrainian music and culture, will perform with the Lviv Orchestra. Petrychenko has released five albums dedicated to 20th-century Ukrainian composers and is the artistic director of the "Sounds of Ukraine" festival and a soloist with the Lviv Philharmonic.
