Katarzyna Jackowska

Kościół Świętej Trójcy, Parafia Ewangelicko-Augsburska w Szczecinie ,ul. Energetyków 8
Performers:
– Isidoro Abramowicz – cantor
– Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue Choir (Berlin)
– Jakub Stefek – organ
On 3 May 1875, the New Synagogue in Szczecin was inaugurated — a building that became a symbol of the city’s Jewish community finally gaining full cultural presence after years of marginalisation and restrictions.
150 years later, its music returns — not as reconstruction, but as living memory. The programme will revive the liberal synagogue liturgy once heard there, where the voices of cantor and choir blended with the sound of the organ.
Central to the concert are works by Louis Lewandowski, who transformed 19th-century Jewish music by combining Protestant chorale with Hebrew prayer. It was he who composed Psalm 121 for the synagogue’s inauguration. Music by Abraham Lichtenstein and Abraham Moshe Bernstein will also be performed.
Before the concert, Anna Koc and Michał Dębowski will present their virtual reconstruction of the synagogue, whose interior and renowned organ were destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938. Though the building is gone, its spirit — music, text, voice — will be heard once more.
