Heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) runs away from her father, who is trying to dissuade her from marrying a notorious playboy.
On her journey to New York, Ellie meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a cynical, unemployed journalist. When their bus breaks down, the pair decide to continue north together. Constant bickering and attempts to find transport on their own are only the beginning of their adventure. The film was the first in history to win Oscars in five major categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Screenplay).
