After the death of a deeply unpopular pope, cardinals from around the globe gather in the Vatican for a conclave to elect a new leader of the Church. Presiding over the proceedings is Cardinal Lawrence, whose role is to ensure the process runs smoothly. However, as tensions rise between two opposing factions and compromising secrets about their candidates begin to surface, Lawrence finds himself facing a moral dilemma:
Should he remain neutral and risk the election of an unworthy candidate? Should he break protocol and take sides? Or perhaps there is a third way?
An unexpected opportunity arises when a mysterious figure appears among the cardinals just before the voting begins – Cardinal Benitez, an unknown associate of the late pope. Who is he? Who sent him? What is his purpose? And could the Church be on the brink of a crisis like no other in its history?
Conclave has received eight Academy Award nominations, winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
