In many opinions, this is the most beautiful film dedicated to maritime adventures and tales set on the vast oceans. In 2004, the film received 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and ultimately won awards for Cinematography and Sound Editing.
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (USA, 2003, 133 minutes) DIRECTOR: Peter Weir
CAST: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D’Arcy
The film is presented in its original language with Polish subtitles.
The main protagonist of the story is the courageous Royal Navy commander, "Lucky" Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe). He is accompanied by his closest friend, the ship's doctor, Dr Stephen Maturin. Their frigate, named Surprise, is suddenly attacked by an overwhelmingly superior enemy force. Despite the ship being severely damaged in the battle and many crew members sustaining injuries, Commander Jack Aubrey embarks on a relentless pursuit across two oceans, determined to capture the enemy vessel at all costs. The stakes are extraordinarily high, with the honour of the commander hanging in the balance. As viewers follow the characters’ adventures, they embark on an exhilarating maritime journey – from the coasts of Brazil through the turbulent waters of Cape Horn, southwards towards the icy landscapes of Antarctica, and finally to the ends of the Earth and the distant shores of the Galapagos Islands.
At this year’s Venice Film Festival, director Peter Weir was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The screening will be preceded by a lecture prepared and delivered by Krzysztof Spór.
