Afrykamera at the Pionier Cinema
Katarzyna Jackowska

The Pionier Cinema
From 24 to 29 April, the Pionier Cinema will become the heart of African culture in Szczecin.
The anniversary 20th edition of the Afrykamera Festival arrives in the city under the theme Sankofa, bringing with it a selection of the most acclaimed African films of the past year.
The programme includes the thriller The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos, the Sudanese love letter Khartoum (Sundance 2025), and the outstanding documentary hit Seeds, a film shortlisted for the 2026 Academy Awards.
“The future of Africa is shaped by the stories we tell about it,” write the organisers. The festival is not only a series of screenings, but also an invitation to reflect on identity, ecology and the reclaiming of roots. The Szczecin edition will conclude with a special screening presented as part of the Film Discussion Club.
Most of the titles will not receive regular cinema distribution in Poland. The programme features films awarded at festivals in Berlin, Sundance and Seattle. The interiors of the Pionier Cinema perfectly reflect the spirit of Sankofa, as the venue itself embodies the connection between past and future.
