From 29 June, Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue will be partially closed to traffic.

Reconstruction of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue is about to begin. Trams will stop running in the evening on 28 June. On 1 July, the Szyrockiego Square – Milczańska Street section will be closed to vehicular traffic.

The closure of the Pomorzany terminus and part of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue will cause a number of changes to public transport timetables in many parts of Szczecin. Detailed information can be found in this press release. Diversions are also planned for private transport.

Substitute transport – bus line 811 and tram line 4

The last line 11 and 12 trams will leave Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue for the terminus on 28 June in the evening. The Pomorzany terminus will be out of service to allow its extension to be completed.

On 29 June, substitute bus line 811 will be launched to run between Dobrzyńska Street and Szarych Szeregów Square, via Budziszyńska Street – Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue – Szyrockiego Square and Kościuszki Square, and from 1 July between Dobrzyńska Street and Kościuszki Square, with a diversion through Budziszyńska, Powstańców Wielkopolskich, Milczańska, Mieszka I, Szyrockiego Square, and further to Piastów.

In addition, from 1 July, tram transport between the city centre and Szyrockiego Square will be operated by two-way trams. For this purpose, an interlacing will be established at Szyrockiego Square, i.e., a turnout allowing the track and travel direction to be changed. Tram line 4 will be running through Szyrockiego Square, Żołnierza Polskiego Square via Kościuszki Square, Szarych Szeregów Square, Rodła Square, Wyzwolenia Square, Żołnierza Polskiego Square (and return via Hołdu Pruskiego Square).

Szczecin has six two-way trams that currently operate along the Wawrzyniaka – Żołnierska section. With the completion of construction work on the new track on Sosabowskiego Street, the two-way trams will run as indicated above for tram line 4. More information will be provided in a separate announcement.

Diversions for vehicular traffic

The first stage of reconstruction of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue will cover the Szyrockiego Square – Milczańska Street section. It will be closed to vehicular traffic on 1 July. Diversions for motor vehicles will be set through:

  • Milczańska Street to Mieszka I Street (the traffic light system will change at the junction of Mieszka I and Milczańska Streets),
  • Starkiewicza Street – Dąbrowskiego Street – Szyrockiego Square,
  • Szpitalna Street – Połabska Street – Boczna Street – Starkiewicza Street – Dąbrowskiego Street – Szyrockiego Square.
  • Włościańska Street (next to the old church) – this is where shuttle signalling will be introduced due to the narrow carriageway.

To make it easier for drivers to find their way, the signs for each diversion will be marked in different colours and with separate graphic symbols.

Access to real estate on the excluded section of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue will be possible through Milczańska Street, and to some addresses – through the construction site (i.e., through a marked lane on Powstancow Wielkopolskich Avenue facing Szyrockiego Square.

It will get easier in a few months’ time

In the second stage of reconstruction of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue, the Milczańska Street – the Pomorzany terminus section will be closed to traffic. The modernisation of the entire Avenue is planned to be completed by July 2025.

Access to Pomorzany will improve in autumn. In November, the streets along the Oder River, connecting the Central Railway Station with the Pomorzany terminus, are planned to be reopened for tram and vehicular traffic. Slightly before that, tram transport will be provided along Dworcowa and Nowa Streets.

“Track revolution” towards Pomorzany

The modernisation of Nadodrzańska Street and Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue is the final task of the second stage of the so-called Track revolution project.

The scope of work includes reconstructing Nabrzeże Wieleckie, Nowa, Dworcowa, Kolumba, Chmielewskiego, Smolańska Streets (jointly referred to as Kolumba for short) and Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue.

The streets section along the Oder River, between Wyszyńskiego Street (at Długi Bridge) and the Pomorzany terminus, is 3.5-kilometre-long. New roadways, pavements and tracks are being built along this entire section, including underground infrastructure, lighting and tram traction. This task also includes the modernisation of the two perpendicular streets, i.e., Dworcowa and Nowa.

The section between Wyszyńskiego Street and the railway station is almost complete. The progress of work on Kolumba Street has exceeded 70%.

“Work on the construction site is conducted seven days a week, from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00-8.00 p.m. About 80 people in total are involved”, said Tomasz Czupryna, Contract Manager at ZUE, a Krakow-based company acting as the contractor .

Also on Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue, new carriageways, pavements, tracks, underground infrastructure (including new water pipelines), lighting and tram traction will be built. Viaducts will be rebuilt. Additional features will include roads and cycle lanes.

The new terminus twice as big as the current one

The common part of both projects, i.e., those covering Kolumba Street and Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue, is the Pomorzany terminus, which will be more than twice as big after its modernisation as it is now. The trackway and five platforms will be 1350/520-metre-long (currently 610/130-metre-long). The terminus area will feature a car park, a holding track, a building for drivers, and public toilets. The rebuilt track layout will allow an exit from each track in two directions (Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue and Kolumba Street).

Substantial aid from the EU

The reconstruction process of Kolumba Street and Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue, divided into two stages, began in November 2021 and was planned to be completed within 24 months. This deadline, however, could not be met due to numerous unexpected underground collisions with pipelines and cables, as well as design-related changes. The contract implementation period was extended to July 2025.

The second stage of the Track revolution included eight tasks and 23 km of trackway that is crucial for the city. The investment value is PLN 592.5 million, including the EU co-funding of PLN 356.2 million.

The applicant and the beneficiary of the project is the Municipality of Szczecin, and Tramwaje Szczecińskie is responsible for its implementation (acting as the project manager).
